Smarty Hardy products have been developed under the following guidelines:
- Double the carrying capacity of a normal bicycles and improved handling
- Quality
- Flexibility
- Reparability
- Mobility; passability in difficult terrain and on poor road conditions
- Availability of spare-parts
All Smarty Hardy products are based on the Phoenix-type bicycle, which has been wide used in Tanzania for more than 30 years, for the following reasons:
- Availability of spare-parts through-out the country – even in the most remote rural areas.
- Reparability: Using known technology insures fast and cheap repairs and maintenance.
Although the Smarty Hardy product range is based in the Phoenix-type bicycle for the above mentioned reasons, major improvements have been made in order to compensate for the higher load carrying capacity. In particular the 4-bar, reinforced, frame insures a long life-span of the Smarty Hardy products as well a providing a more rigid bike with better handling.
The smarty Hardy product range is entirely manufactured in mild steel components, which makes the products relatively heavy in comparison to more modern light weight bikes available. However, the usage of mild steel serves two crucial purposes:
Reparability: Mild steel can bere-hammered to dimension and re-welded through-out the country - opposed to lighter materials such as aluminium.
Cost price. Mild steel is considerably less expensive than all other potential materials.
Design:
Ordinary Smarty Hardy:
The Ordinary Smarty Hardy is in essence similar to normal Phoenix-type bicycles. The main difference is in the stronger and more rigid frame and the heavy-duty load carrier which insures a longer life-span and better load carrying handling than a normal bike.
Integrated Smarty Hardy:
The integrated Smarty Hardy is the essence of Smarty Hardy designs. Maximizing the load carrying capacity of a bicycle through altering the design of a normal bike while maintaining the characteristics in terms of spare-parts.
The integrated Smarty Hardy main features, apart from being designed from A-Z to carry heavy loads with the 4-bar heavy duty frame, spokes etc. is the rear load carrier-bed suspended in shock-absorbers. The rear 20”heavy duty wheel contributes to lower the centre of gravity and there by allowing larger loads and greatly improving the handling of the bike. The shocks insure a more comfortable ride; but more importantly they greatly prolong the life-span of the rear wheel.
The integrated Smarty Hardy is very versatile in its application and can go anywhere a normal bike can.
Smarty Hardy Transport Tricycle
The Smarty Hardy Transport Tricycle is based on the Asian Rick-Shaw tricycle. The constructional design as well as the dimensions has been changed in order to suit the African environment. The Smarty Hardy can carry extremely heavy loads, but is primarily aimed at areas with flat and relatively hard surfaces, as the handling characteristics of the tricycle are very different from the bicycle in terms of balance and agility. The Tricycle is extremely versatile in its application; carrying anything from 200 litres of water, fruits and veggies, animal feed, commodities to garbage.
Smarty Hardy Village Ambulance
The Smarty Hardy Village Ambulance is designed primarily for transporting sick or injured person in the rural areas to medical centres. The detachable stretcher, suspended in shock-absorbers, provides the patient with a comfortable place to lie while being transported. Depending on the terrain, the ambulance can be operated by 1 to 3 persons. On hard surface roads one driver is sufficient but in difficult terrain 3 persons are required. When operated by 3 persons the ambulance can negotiate terrain which is beyond any motorised 4x4, thereby enabling short-cuts through very difficult terrain directly to the medical facility – saving crucial time for the patient.
